String Quilt Blocks Tutorial

Let’s explain how to make a “String Quilt Block” in an easy to understand tutorial:

A “String Quilt Block” is a simple and fun sewing technique that allows you to create beautiful and colorful patchwork blocks. In this tutorial, we will show you how to make a “String Quilt” block step by step. You can use these blocks to create throws, table runners, throw pillows and many other amazing projects. Let’s start!

Necessary materials String Quilt Blocks Tutorial:

Colored fabric scraps (can be leftovers from other projects);
A piece of base fabric (can be cotton or other sturdy fabric);
Ruler;
Scissors;
Sewing machine (optional);
Iron.
Step 1: Fabric Selection
First, select the colored fabrics you want to use in your “String Quilt” block. They can be of different colors, prints and sizes. The diversity of fabrics will make your block more interesting and beautiful.

Step 2: Base Tissue Preparation
Cut a piece of the base fabric to the desired size for your block. An 8″ x 8″ square usually works well, but you can adjust the size to suit your preferences.

Step 3: Cutting the Strips
Now, cut strips from your colored fabrics. The strips can be of different widths, but a common size is about 2 inches wide. The strips can vary in length as you will adjust them to the base fabric later.

Step 4: Sewing the Strips
Take a strip of colored fabric and place it diagonally across the base fabric. Leave a small seam allowance at the top and bottom of the base fabric. Now sew the strip into place along the center of the strip using a sewing machine or hand sewing.

Step 5: Adding More Strips
Repeat Step 4 with other strips of colored fabric, overlapping them slightly with the first sewn strip. You can align the strips randomly or follow a specific pattern, such as a color gradient.

Step 6: Pressing the Seams
After adding all the strips, turn the block over and, with an iron, press the seams to accommodate the fabrics.

Step 7: Trimming the Block
Now, trim the block so that it is even and to the desired size. Trim away any excess fabric that is beyond the edges of the base fabric.

Congratulations! You have just created a beautiful “String Quilt” block. Now you can make more blocks using the same technique and then put them together to create a blanket or other creative sewing project. Let your imagination run wild and have fun with this enchanting quilting technique!
