Crochet Quilt Patterns: How to make a basic quilt

Crochet is a great way to create a quilt that is unique and personalized. There are many different crochet quilt patterns available, so it’s easy to find one that fits your style. In this article, we’ll show you how to make a simple quilt using the Crochet Quilt Pattern for Beginners.

To make the quilt, you will need:

  • -One square yard of fabric for the backing (a light weight fabric will work best)
  • -One skein of medium weight yarn in each of two colors (for example, red and green)
  • -Crochet hook size H (6mm) or smaller
  • -Tapestry needle
  • -Scissors

1. Begin by crocheting a basic square in each of your two colors. You can use any type of crochet stitch, all in all it’s best to use a chain stitch for this project since it is strong and will not stretch out. Make sure that your stitches are evenly spaced across the square.

2. Next, fold the square in half so that the crochet stitches are on the inside of the fabric. Make sure that the fold lines up exactly with the edge of the fabric so that your quilt will look symmetrical when finished.

3. Now, using a tapestry needle, sew the edges of the quilt together, being careful not to pull too tight or you may end up with a uneven quilt surface. Once you have sewn all of the edges together, turn your quilt right side out and enjoy your new creation!

How to make a quilt top

If you have never crocheted before, this is the tutorial for you! In this article, we will show you how to make a quilt top using easy crochet patterns.

First, choose a pattern. We chose the Starburst quilt pattern from Charted Crochet by Debbie Stoller. It is very simple and can be completed in just a few hours.

1. Chain 65 (or any multiple of 3 + 1).

2. Turn your work so that the chain point is at the bottom of your work and join with a slip stitch into the first chain, making sure not to twist the chain stitches. You now have a loop big enough to start your quilt top.

3. Work 3 dc into the loop, then **work 2 dc into each of the next 4 stitches** (6dc). Join with a slip stitch into the first dc, making sure not to twist the stitches. You now have an 8-dcd Cluster.

4-7. Work 2 dc into each of the next 7 stitches (14dc), then **work 1 dc into each of the next 8 stitches** (20dc). Join with a slip stitch into the first dc, making sure not to twist the stitches. You now have a 16-dcd Cluster at either end of your work.

8-9 & 10-11: Working in groups of 2, work 1 sc into each sc around (16sc). Join with a sl st into the first sc. Fasten off and hide your yarn tail behind the quilt top.

12-13: Working in groups of 2, work 1 dc into each dc around (16dc). Join with a sl st into the first dc. Fasten off and hide your yarn tail behind the quilt top.

14: Working in groups of 2, work 1 sc into each sc around (16sc). Join with a sl st into the first sc. Fasten off and hide your yarn tail behind the quilt top.

15: Sew one 16-dcd Cluster to one end of the starburst quilt top. Sew two 10-dcd Clusters to the other end of the quilt top.

How to make a quilt border

Crochet is a great way to add some texture and detail to your quilt fabric, without having to struggle with sewing. Here are four easy crochet quilt border patterns that will help you get started.

1. Chain stitch border

This simple crochet border looks like it would be difficult to make, but it’s actually quite easy. Just chain two or three stitches to create a narrow stripe around the edge of your quilt. You can vary the width and thickness of the chain stitch border by changing the number of stitches you chain.

2. Single crochet border

If you want a more traditional crochet border, try single crocheting around the edge of your quilt. This technique creates a more stable edge than chain stitching, and is also less likely to fray. If you’re new to single crochet, start by working a few rows in double crochet before switching to single crochet.

3. Treble (triple) crochet border

Another popular pattern for crochet borders is treble (triple) crochets. This pattern creates a sturdy foundation that won’t fray or stretch out over time. Work triple crochets just outside of your existing stitches, then finish off by adding an extra row of single crochets in between each triple crochet row.

4. Picot border

If you’re looking for a pattern that’s a little more complicated, try working a picot border. This pattern involves making small loops with your crochet hook, then pulling the loops through the stitches in the adjacent row. You can create a variety of designs by changing the number and size of the picot loops.

How to make a quilt corner

Quilt corner instructions:

1. Sew the two corners together with a seam allowance of 1 inch.

2. Make a slip knot in one of the yarn ends and use it to draw the yarn through the loop on the needle. Do this again to bring up the other end of the yarn. Hold onto these ends and pull tight, creating a knot.

3. Trim off any excess yarn, being careful not to cut into the seam allowance. You now have a neat little corner piece!

4. To finish your quilt corner, sew it to one of the main panels using a seam allowance of 1/4 inch or so. This will keep your corner from migrating and looking sloppy later on in the quilting process.
