Crochet Bee Tutorial: Materials You’ll Need

Materials You’ll Need:
-Crochet hook size H (5.5mm)
-Worsted weight yarn in grey and yellow
-Tapestry needle
-Fiberfill
-Scissors
-Black yarn for antennae

How to Make a Basic Crochet Bee

Making a Basic Crochet Bee is easy if you have the right supplies. You will need:

-Crochet hook (size H)

-Yarn needle

-Scissors

-Black yarn for the eyes and antennae

-White yarn for the body, wings, and beekeeper hat

Start by making a chain of 18. Turn your work so that the wrong side is facing out. You will be working in continuous rounds. Round 1: Make a magic loop using the black yarn, and insert your crochet hook into the center of the loop.

Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook (2 loops now). You now have a “bunny ear” (or whatever shape you want to make your bee’s head). *Note: On subsequent rounds, do not turn your work; work in continuous rounds from this point onwards.*

To Start

Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in next loop. Repeat around – 8 hdc.

Rnd 3: Change to white yarn, and hdc in next two loops. *Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook* – 4 hdc.

Round 4: Change to black yarn, and hdc in next two loops. *Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook* – 6 hdc.

Rnd 5: Change to white yarn, dc in next three loops. *Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook* – 9 dc.

Round 6: Change to black yarn, dc in next three loops. *Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook* – 12 dc.

Rnd 7-13: Repeat Rounds 5 and 6 – 18 dc.

Round 14: Hdc in next 10 dc, sl st in top of hdc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in ends.

Make the bee’s antennae by making a chain of 8 (or however many you need). Turn your work so that the wrong side is facing out and ch 1 (does not count as a hdc). Hdc in each loop around. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in ends.

Make the bee’s eyes by making a small white dot with your yarn needle, then continuing to make chains until you have the desired size eyes (mine are about 2 inches). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in ends.

Make the beekeeper hat by crocheting a small circle using black yarn, then cutting it out (be careful not to cut yourself!). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in ends.

Your basic Crochet Bee is complete!

Adding Detail to Your Crochet Bee

If you’re new to crochet, adding detail to your Bee can be a challenge. Here are a few tips to help make your Bee more lifelike:

1. Add Height and Depth to Your Crochet Bee

Adding height and depth to your Bee helps it look more realistic. Try making the body of your Bee taller by making the foundation chains longer, or widening the circumference of the circle by adding more chains.

For added depth, try crocheting in the round instead of in rows, and increasing the number of stitches per round (this will give your Bee a more pronounced bump).

2. Create Complex Patterns with Small Pieces

Instead of working one large piece from start to finish, break your Bee down into smaller pieces that can be worked independently. This will help you create bolder patterns with intricate details.

For example, work a small oval shape for the bee’s head using two different colors of yarn, or make several small circles for its wings using different colors and techniques.

3. Use contrasting Colors for Variety and Depth

Adding contrast within your Bee will help it pop against its background and create depth of color. Crochetters can use different shades or tones of each color to achieve this effect, or they can use two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel (for example, light green and dark green).whatever method is used,Remember to experiment so that you can find what works best for you!

Tips for Making a Great Crochet Bee

If you’re a crocheter who’s looking for tips and techniques to help make your work look its best, read on! Here are five tips for making a great crochet bee:

1. Use the right yarn and hook for the job.

Bee yarn is thick and soft, so it makes a great foundation for any kind of project. But if you’re working with something stiffer like cotton yarn, you’ll need to use a larger hook to get the same results.

2. Keep things symmetrical.

When you crochet bees, be sure to keep them symmetrical—lefties should do the same thing as righties when following these simple steps. If your bee starts to look lopsided, fix it by reversing one row or column of stitches.

3. Go slow and steady.

No one wants their work to come out sloppy or jagged, so take it easy when crocheting bees! Work one stitch at a time, following the instructions carefully before moving on to the next step. This will help prevent any mistakes from creeping in later on.

4. Use contrasting colors sparingly.

The bright colors that often adorn bee motifs are great for showy projects like blankets or afghans, but they can be tough to crochet with accuracy and consistency. Stick with neutrals or light colors when tackling this type of project instead; they’ll look just as good (if not better) in the end!

5. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

If you’re having trouble following the traditional crochet bee pattern, try something new! There are endless possibilities for creating unique works of art with this classic crochet motif. Just be sure to test your work out before you start crocheting in earnest—you don’t want to end up with a disaster on your hands!
