Materials:

  • -Crochet hook size G (4.00 mm) or size needed to get gauge
  • -Tapestry needle
  • -Succulent of your choice (see note below)
  • -Scissors

To Begin:

1. Start by making a Magic Ring using your chosen yarn and your crochet hook.

2. ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, continue to make 2 dc in each ring around (6 sts).

3. Change to brown yarn and sl st into top of first DC made, pull up tight (7 sts). [Note: Skip next st.]

4-5. Sl st into next st, ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 1, sk next st; sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around (5 sts).

6. Sl st into top of ch-1 sp made earlier, pull up tight (6 sts). [Note: Skip next 2 sts.]

7-8 Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, *dc in next 3 sts; ch 1, sk next st; rep from * around (3 sts).

9. Ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 1, sk next st; sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around (2 sts).

10. Sl st into top of ch-1 sp made earlier, pull up tight (1 st). Fasten off leaving long tail.

Your succulent border should now look like this:

Attach tapestry needle to tail end of border and weave in through all the stitches. Weave in any loose ends and you’re done!

Tips and Tricks

First and foremost, be sure to use the correct hook size for the yarn you are using. If in doubt, go up a hook size. And remember to do a swatch beforehand to check the gauge.

When crocheting in the round, make sure to space your stitches evenly around the circle you are working on. This will help prevent your piece from shrinking or losing its shape.

If you want to add some height or interest to your project, try working with different color stitches in each round. This will create a more variegated look.

And don’t forget about embellishments! You can add beads, pom-poms, sequins or other things to really dress up your piece. Have fun with it!
