The slip stitch is also commonly used in crochet and works similarly to how the slip knot works in knitting. To do this stitch, you insert the hook into the next st from the previous row, yo and pull through both of these loops on the hook (see image below).
How to make a basic crochet project
To start your crochet experience, you’ll need some supplies. Basic materials include a ball of yarn, crochet hook, and scissors. Before beginning any project, make sure to read through the basic instructions below to get an understanding of the process.
Once you have all the materials, follow these steps to create your first Crochet project:
1) Begin by making a slip knot with the crochet hook. This is simply a loop of yarn that will be used to guide your stitches.
2) Next, take the ball of yarn and insert it into the slip knot. Be sure to twist the yarn enough so that it forms a firm grip between your thumb and index finger.
3) Then use your other hand to pull up on the yarn until it’s tight against the slip knot. You should now have one long loop of yarn.
4) Next, divide this loop in half by making a simple ‘V’ with your hands. Make sure that both ‘halves’ are equal in size before continuing crocheting.
5) With each half of the loop now held between your fingers, begin crocheting in rows along one edge (the top edge if making a Scarf or Shawl). Stitches will be made by inserting the crochet hook into each stitch on either side of the V and pulling up a loop (see picture below).
6) Make sure that you work evenly along each row – don’t skip stitches or go too fast! Once you’ve completed the row, turn the work so that the wrong side is facing you.
7) Now continue crocheting in rows until the project reaches your desired length or size. When you’re finished crocheting, cut off the remaining end of the yarn and tie it off in a knot. Your Crochet project is now complete!

Make an identical loop in the next chain. Yarn over with your right hand (going behind the first loop on your left hand), pull through both loops on your hook, and continue crocheting.
Another common crochet stitch is double crochet (dc). To do a dc, make a chain 2 (counts as 1 dc), insert the hook into the second chain from the hook (from front to back), yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through both loops on your hook.
