Beginner Crochet Cardigan
Hello dear reader, it is with great affection and respect that today we are going to create a simplified and friendly step-by-step guide to crochet a cardigan for beginners. This project will be fun and rewarding even if you’ve never crocheted before. Let’s go!
Step 1: Choose Your Materials
To get started, you will need:
500g crochet yarn (choose a color you love)
Crochet hook size 5mm
Scissors
Decorative buttons (optional)
Measuring tape
Step 2: Take a Voltage Sample (Optional)
If you are new to crochet, it may be helpful to do a small swatch to familiarize yourself with the tension. This will help you prevent the cardigan from being too tight or too loose.
Step 3: Start with the Chain Stitch
Make a chain with the yarn using your crochet hook. The number of chains should equal the width you want the cardigan to be, usually starting with your bust size plus a few inches.
Step 4: Work the High Point (PA)
Start working the double crochet (DP) in the third chain from the hook. Make double crochets until the end of the chain.
Step 5: Continue with High Points
Turn your work and continue double crochet into each stitch in the previous row. Repeat until the piece reaches the desired length for the back of the cardigan.
Step 6: Create the Sleeves
To create the sleeves, leave a few stitches unworked on the sides of the piece. The number of stitches you leave unworked will depend on the size of the sleeves you want.
Step 7: Work the Body
Continue working double crochets for the rest of the row to create the body of the cardigan. Continue until desired length is reached.
Step 8: Make the Sleeves
Return to the stitches left unworked on the sleeves and start working the double crochets again. Continue until the sleeves are the desired length.
Step 9: Make the Edges
For the front edges of the cardigan, work a few rows of single crochets to create a pretty finish.
Step 10: Add Buttons (Optional)
If desired, sew decorative buttons to the front of the cardigan, lining them up with the stitches you left unworked for the buttonholes.
Step 11: Finish and Enjoy!
Cut the thread, tie and hide the loose ends. Your crochet cardigan for beginners is ready! Dress up in it and feel the warmth and joy of creating something so incredible with your own hands.
Remember, crochet is about fun and creativity, so don’t worry about perfection. With practice, you will improve your skills and be able to create wonderful pieces. Enjoy the process and have fun making your own unique cardigan!
