The Basics of Waffle Stitch Crochet
Waffle stitch crochet is a type of crochet that uses the waffle pattern. The waffle stitch is created by alternating increases and decreases. This creates a textured fabric. The basic stitches for waffle stitch crochet are chain, slip stitch, single crochet, and double crochet.
How to Make a Basic Waffle Stitch Crochet Pattern
If you’re new to crocheting waffles, this basic stitch is a great place to start. The waffle stitch creates a textured fabric that’s both comfortable to wear and easy to work with. Just follow these simple steps and you’ll be making your very own waffle dresses in no time!
1) Chain 18 (or however many stitches you need).
2) Turn your work so the wrong side is facing out and sl st into the first chain, ch1. (This forms the foundation chain for your waffles.)
3) Now sc in each ch1 space around. For added texture, try varying your stitches by doing one sc in the middle of two different chains or vice versa. You can also do doubles (2 sc in one space) or triples (3 sc in one space). Be creative!
4) When you reach the end of the round, sl st into the top of the first sc to form an adjustable loop. Fasten off and leave a long tail for later.5) Repeat steps 2-4 until you’ve completed the desired number of rounds.
6) To finish, weave in your ends.
How to Change the Pattern
This is a tutorial for how to change the pattern for making waffle stitch crochet. The original pattern is done in rounds, but you can do it in rows too if you want.
The instructions are written with a multiple of 12 stitches, so if you want to make a larger or smaller project, just divide the number of stitches by 12 before starting (e.g., if you wanted to make a project with 36 stitches instead of 12, divide 36 by 12 and start).
To begin, chain 3 (or whatever number of stitches your project will be) and join to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 3 (or however many times your project will be in total), work 2 dc in ring, join to first dc (2 dc made).
Round 2: Work *dc in next dc, ch 1* around; join to first dc (6 ch-1 sps made). Fasten off.
The “ch 1” counts as the first stitch of the round. This is what makes it look like a waffle pattern on the front side!
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until your project is the desired length or size.
To change to rows, just continue following the instructions above, but start with a ch 3 (or whatever number of stitches your project will be in total). Do not join in the beginning rounds.
There you have it! A different pattern for waffle stitch crochet!
Tips for Crocheting with Waffle Stitch
Crochet with the Waffle Stitch is a fun and easy way to create patterns. This stitch is perfect for blankets, shawls, and hats. Follow these tips for Crocheting with the Waffle Stitch:
1. Hold your crochet hook in your left hand and loop the yarn over your right hand.
2. With your crochet hook in your left hand, insert it into the first chain from the hook (this will be the working yarn). Yarn over again and pull through both loops on your hook (2 loops now remain on your hook).
3. Do the same thing with the next chain (the second working yarn), then insert your hook into the next chain (third working yarn). Yarn over again and pull through both loops on your hook (3 loops now remain on your hook).
4. Skip the next two chains, then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook (4 loops now remain on yourhook). You’ve just made a “waffle” stitch! Repeat steps 2-4 until you reach the desired length of work or desired width of fabric, then cut off any excess yarn.
